To kick off MyStory, I will start by sharing my experience of the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Earlier in 2011, I was fortunate enough to be able to visit the 3.2 acre Honolulu Academy of Art when Creation Road visited the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The Honolulu Academy of Arts is certainly a must see for those visiting to or living on Oahu. The academy has a large collection artworks from around the world including Asian, American, European, African, Oceania, and the Hawaiian art collection, which chronicles the history of art in Hawaii.
I took a short and pleasant bus ride from Waikiki to the Honolulu Academy of Arts and shortly after arriving was enjoying a wonderful guided tour from one of the friendly and knowledgeable volunteers. The tour began with the amazing story of Anna Rice Cooke – the founder of the Academy. In her dedication statement at the opening of the museum on April 8, 1927 Anna said:
“That our children of many nationalities and races, born far from the centres of art, may receive an intimation of their own cultural legacy and wake to the ideals embodied in the arts of their neighbours … that Hawaiians, Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Filipinos, Northern Europeans and all other people living here, contacting through the channel of art those deep intuitions common to all, may perceive a foundation on which a new culture, enriched by the old strains may be built in the islands.”
This is certainly an art museum which can be enjoyed by those from all walks of life.
As well as a large collection of artwork the Honolulu Academy of Arts features The Doris Duke Theatre at the Academy which hosts meetings, concerts, lectures, and presentations. The theatre is also home to Hawaii’s GLBT film festival the Rainbow Film Festival. Arts education and restoration are also facets of the Academy.
You can also browse in the Academy Shop or eat at the Pavilion Cafe.
One could easily spend a day just admiring the collection the Honolulu Academy of Arts has on show and a visit is highly recommended.
